Melioration Dominates Maximization: Stable Suboptimal Performance Despite Global Feedback
نویسندگان
چکیده
Situations that present individuals with a conflict between local and global gains often evoke a behavioral pattern known as melioration — a preference for immediate rewards over higher long-term gains. Using a variant of a binary forcedchoice paradigm by Tunney & Shanks (2002), we explored the potential role of global feedback as a means to reduce this bias. We hypothesized that frequent explicit feedback about future expected and optimal gains might enable decision makers to overcome the documented tendency to meliorate when choices are rewarded probabilistically. Our results suggest that the human tendency to meliorate is tenacious and even prospective normative feedback is insufficient to reliably overcome inefficient choice allocation. We identify human memory limitations as a potential source of this problem and sketch a reinforcement learning model that mimics the effects of a variable feedback horizon on performance. We conclude that melioration is a powerful explanatory mechanism that can account for a wide range of human behavior.

متن کاملResource allocation for maximizing outage throughput in OFDMA systems with finite-rate feedback
Previous works on orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) systems with quantized channel state information (CSI) were mainly based on suboptimal quantization methods. In this paper, we consider the performance limit of OFDMA systems with quantized CSI over independent Rayleigh fading channels using the rate-distortion theory. First, we establish a lower bound on the capacity of th...
متن کاملMelioration as rational choice: sequential decision making in uncertain environments.
Melioration-defined as choosing a lesser, local gain over a greater longer term gain-is a behavioral tendency that people and pigeons share. As such, the empirical occurrence of meliorating behavior has frequently been interpreted as evidence that the mechanisms of human choice violate the norms of economic rationality. In some environments, the relationship between actions and outcomes is know...
متن کاملA Suboptimal Controller Design Methodology for Input-Output Feedback-Linearizable Systems
This paper addresses suboptimal control of nonlinear systems which can be feedbacklinearized from input to output. The case of input-to-state linearizable systems is also covered as a special case. The method is thus applicable to all nonlinear systems which can be partially linearized using the method of output-feedback linearization while having a stable internal (or zero) dynamics. The well-...
